KAIKOURA CUP REPORT

Kaiapoi won the Kaikoura Cup in an exciting finish in darkness at Waimakariri Golf course on Sunday June 21. Playing the final against our old friend and foe Rangiora, the Kaiapoi team of Matt Adam, Jason Sincock, Ryan Adams, Scott Fox, Roy Hollick and Josh Counihan fought a tight contest which ended 3-all. Matt almost secured victory for the team at 18 just missing a birdie attempt, while earlier Roy's opponent sank a huge uphill putt from the edge of the 18th green to snatch an unlikely half.

So the final went to a sudden-death playoff between Matt and 18-year-old Jamie Mead from Rangiora. As darkness closed in, a gallery of about 30 watched a fascinating battle of power, skill and nerves - climaxing at each hole with fine putting under pressure. The first playoff hole was halved with birdies, the second hole into the wind was halved with pars. On the 3rd green darkness made it tough for both players to judge line and distance on long birdie putts. Those in the gallery just off the green could scarcely see where the hole was once the flag was removed.  Jamie charged his first putt past the hole and couldn't save par, then sportingly conceeded Matt's 2-foot par putt and the match. Well done Matt and the whole team.   Kaiapoi's number 2 team made the semifinal and came 3rd.

The weather improved to allow the playing of a Queen's Birthday Tournament.

This was the initiative of the Fundraising Committee and a field  of 73 braved winter weather.

WOODWARD CUP 2008

Team Report

The Clearwater course was beautifully prepared and it was a perfect day for golf.

Unfortunately the guys were outgunned in the semi final 4.5 / 1.5 by a very focused Christchurch team who went on to beat Windsor 5 / 1 in the final.

It is a real challenge for smaller clubs such as Kaiapoi to compete with the larger and more financial clubs like Christchurch.

The 30-40 Kaiapoi supporters on course were very proud of the guys, and although the team is disappointed they are already looking forward to next year.

The highlights of the day for Kaiapoi were Scott Fox shooting a one under par 71 and winning his match 5&4, Matt Adam coming back from 5 down and winning six holes in a row to eventually go on and draw his match, and of course Karl Mariu playing his 150th Woodward cup game.

It has been a long road to the Kaiapoi team which started in March with eight Kaikoura Cup games, the last of which was a final against Rangiora, to win the right to play in the Woodward cup. We learned a lot from our first year back in the competition after 38 year absence, and will put those lessons to good use for next year.

In two weeks time Rangiora, along with two other clubs, will get to play against wooden spooners Waitikiri in a gross stableford match. The winner of which will get to play Woodward Cup next season. The Kaiapoi team wishes Rangiora all the best for this match.
