Chairmans 12 Monthly Board Report 2006
I want to thank the present Board Members Trevor Inwood, Murray Garven, Shona Green, Peter Furlong, and Neville Lyons for their huge input this year.
We are very fortunate to have high calibre Board representatives such as Trevor and Murray, their vision; management skills and business acumen have been invaluable especially during the catering and green keeping contract negotiations.
We wish to say a special thank you to Shona; you have represented the Ladies section diligently for 3 years and are now standing down. It has been a pleasure to work with Shona whose unique sense of humour and dedication to the club has been an inspiration to the Board.
It has been really gratifying to see committee vacancies being filled for the coming year. What a list of talented playing committee members we are getting. The Board sees this as continued ongoing support for them and the club’s future, as we head into our Centennial year.
With the wet and cold winter, green fee receipts dropped dramatically and with increased spending on the course we were unable to meet projections. We have however, been fortunate to secure funds from Pub Charities and club sponsorship to offset some of the expenditure around the club. Many hours are spent on these applications for them to be successful so we sincerely thank Neville and Margaret for the extra work put into these applications. Successful grants were received for the front path sealing, the clubhouse tables and the new ball washers, which have arrived.
The Board has trimmed several areas to meet the 2007 budget as we see the need for a general tidy up around the course as a necessity rather than any development in the next 12 months.
Thank you once again to John Walter for your continued support and diligence of our monthly accounts and assistance in setting the budgets.
Our thanks go to Peter Commons and his staff for presenting the course as it is today. We know it was a difficult winter to maintain your high standards and with spring came the constant winds that have played havoc with your spraying programme.
The Greens committee led by Trevor Monk have been especially helpful to the Board this year since our course walk around in February. A special mention to the members for the continued improvement in repairing pitch marks and divots since the 6 monthly report, please keep using those buckets of sand
We have the South Island Under 23 Ladies 54 hole Championship programmed for early 2007 and congratulations also go to the Kaiapoi Club Ladies section for being successful in bringing the South Island 2008 Tournament to the Kaiapoi Golf Club. These tournaments will show visitors our course’s reputation of being the “Jewel of North Canterbury” is true.
In 2005, the Board was criticised for the lack of spending on the course so this year $29,180 was spent improving the playing area. The removal of trees on 2 and 5 has opened up the fairways to the sun and grass is beginning to regenerate. To improve the fairways further, over sowing has been recommended by the Greens committee. The Greens committee walk of the course in November will identify areas needing improvement for our Centennial year. The Greens committee is currently getting quotes for stumps removal and the over sowing of up to 6 fairways.
In August, the Greens committee recommended to the Board that we begin redevelopment of the 13th hole with an early start to construction to have the hole in play in 2007. Unfortunately due to delays in gaining club approval [Rule 45 b] we missed the opportunity to make that early start. A number of submissions were received from club members asking for the development to be held over until after the centennial celebrations. The Board took into account these submissions and withdrew the submitted application for funding so the proposal has been put on hold until late next year, when we hope a start can be made soon after the celebrations. The Board wishes to thank the Greens committee and Bob Bradley for the excellent preparation of the 13th hole proposal.
The new asphalt seal has made the approach to the clubhouse and No 1 tee visually appealing. The new tee block at 10 will be in play soon and tees 7, 9 and 15 will allow more area to place the tee markers. Tree removal around the course will continue over the next few years, enabling improvement of all fairways and save the wear and tear on machinery.
Thanks to Mike Cunningham and his staff. Your enthusiasm is starting to reap rewards with an increased numbers of visitors to our club; this is very encouraging and repeat bookings at The Moorings reflect well on presentation of food and staff. The Board meets regularly with the catering staff to continue to improve the standards being offered in the restaurant. Slowly but surely the income from the Gaming Room is beginning to increase with the larger number of visitors.
Congratulations to all members who represented the club so successfully this year.
The Ladies have now had tenure of the Boyle Cup for 3 years (long may your success continue) and they won the Interclub 18 hole competition and the Ringers Trophy.
The Men retained the Templeton Cup, The Toby Richards Trophy and the Maguire Hendon Cup. Our Super Seniors team won the Canterbury Super Seniors competition.
Congratulations to all those players who were selected to represent North Canterbury in the Woodward and Pollock Cup teams.
Matt Adam, Jason Sincock and Tyrone Nelson have represented Canterbury in many fixtures and Trevor Inwood had a managerial role.
At the conclusion of the interclub season a very successful teams victory dinner was held. From these victorious teams, the Board put forward four nominations for the 2006 North Canterbury Sports Awards and three of these were selected as finalists in their respective sections.
Give Golf a Go Day
Doug Williams and Kerry Mariu in conjunction with the club office have excelled themselves with the recent Give Golf a Go presentation. After advertising in the surrounding district, they had 60 prospective club members attend to get instruction from professionals and club members and hopefully join our golf club. The numbers attending set a record for this Canterbury Golf sponsored day and more follow-up days have been held. I had the pleasure of attending a Sunday morning session to promote all that our club is offering. Congratulations on a well-run presentation.
The Board would like to express their sincere thanks to all committees and club members who over the last 12 months, have donated their valuable time and expertise to help run a well organised, successful and contented club. A brief overview follows:
Trevor Monk and the Greens committee have recommended to the Board many suggestions that led to the many marked improvements including No.1 paths, the tees renovations and the tree removals on 2 and 5.
Men’s Club Captain Peter Furlong and his committee have completed a long season culminating in a very successful open tournament, held last month. Thank you Peter, you took over a major role in the club at the last minute and have lead the men’s section through another successful season. Thank you also to Bob Petrie who took over as Saturday starter when Marg decided to play again.
Ladies Club Captain Janice Cattermole and her committee are always so well organised and willing to help out, especially with the gardens around the course. We must also thank the ladies section for running the Saturday raffle.
Doug Williams and John Rainey run these popular monthly Wednesday tournaments and with Christmas approaching there will be the hams and turkeys to win.
Every Wednesday night during the summer months, the twilight fields are always full. Thank you Ron Adams and his team of helpers.
These very popular sections are always well patronised and well organised by Dave Hawes, Tony Melrose, Trevor Monk and Geoff Cooper.
North West Sensational Sunday Tournaments
Joan Parish, with assistance from the office has coordinated these tournaments, which are held monthly at five different venues.
A dedicated group have regularly turned up for the monthly games. Numbers have dwindled over recent years so I warmly invite members, especially new ones, to come along for a relaxed, fun afternoon. We shall even endeavour to get you a partner for the foursome games, should you need one.
This is a growth area in all golf clubs, giving learner golfers and those unable to commit to 18 holes, the opportunity to play golf. A Kaiapoi innovation is to allow our 9 holers to play golf all seven days of the week. We hope that some of you will progress on to 18 holes and contribute to the success that is the Kaiapoi Golf Club. Margaret Brown and Margaret Gualter are convenors of the 9 holers.
Lyn Shaskey with the help of many club members gives instruction to junior members on Thursday afternoons, from October through to March. These young members are the future of our club and we must encourage and support them. Thank you Kevin Allan who has volunteered to manage our Junior Interclub team.
These enthusiastic club members have continued to assist the greenkeeper in many tasks. The cleanups after the tree felling enabled the course to be back in play, with very little delay. This is a prime example of this dedicated group that the club is indebted to and we can’t risk losing your valuable contribution. If you have a few spare hours next year, they would appreciate your assistance too.
Planning is well underway for the celebrations in Labour Weekend next year. The new shirts, caps, glasses and golf balls with the new centennial logo, that the Board recently approved, will be available to purchase in December.
Once again the Board wishes to thank Bob Sincock for the sterling work he does policing the course. His vigilance in apprehending those who continue to believe they can play golf at Kaiapoi, without paying green fees, is invaluable to the club.
The day-to-day task of manning the office is getting bigger each year. Major tasks undertaken this year are; finalising
the implementation of the Dot Golf card system, compiling the trophy database which is now ready for printing, continued updating of the club web site www.kaiapoigolf.co.nz, (which is well worth looking at) the gaming machines upgrade to electronic monitoring system (EMS) and organising the annual fundraising raffle, which this year is dedicated to the Centennial committee. Secretary Manager Neville Lyons and Margaret Mundy continue to run a very efficient and friendly office.
Finally, thank you to all the club’s sponsors for without them many of our activities could not happen. We encourage you to support those sponsors when possible.
Thank you all, for your continued support and good golfing!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Board Chairman
