Kaiapoi
7th August 2003 to 1st Sept 2006
The Boyle Cup was presented to the Christchurch Ladies Golf Club in 1914, and is a Canterbury inter-club challenge trophy.
The records show the cup was first challenged for in June 1914 by Richmond Hill Golf Club and then again in 1919. As there were few golf clubs in Canterbury the same clubs tended to challenge.
The longest reign has been accomplished by Rakaia Ladies Golf Club who held on to the trophy for 27 challenges played between 1959 and 1966.
Conditions are:
The club holds the Boyle Cup until challenged and beaten by another club and there after to be held in succession by each club winning same until challenged and beaten.
Any club wishing to issue a challenge shall apply in writing to the club holding the cup. The club then holds a ballot and notifies the 6 challenging clubs.
The cup can only be challenged for six times in a calendar year.
There are only five players in each team who must play on handicap.
- Kaiapoi first challenged for the cup in 1971 against Greendale but this was unsuccessful.
- Again we challenged in 1973, this time with success, but in 1974 lost it to Avondale.
- Then in 1981 we won it off Charteris Bay Ladies, who had held it successfully from 18th August 1976 to 8th May 1981 and then only to lose it on our first challenge.
- We held it again in 1987 and in 1994.
- In August 2003 we won it off Windsor and after 19 challenges we have put the Boyle Cup back in our cabinet for the summer.
The cup will come out again in March for the 2007 season which also coincides with our Centennial year.
Over these 19 challenges the teams have been spread over many of our golf members giving them experience of the challenge of match play to which there have been some very close and exciting games.
The players who have participated during this period are, Jill Cassidy, Trish Taylor, Lynne Bodger, Val Megget, Kath Johnston, Lorraine Garven, Nancy Wasley, Barbara McJarrow, June Matheson, Val Burnett, Maureen Van Koeverden, Marj Wright, Janice Cattermole, Kerry Williams, Lyn Rainey, Win Robb, Nancy McGregor and Liz Williams.
